About the Book

Between sight, life, and aging lies far more than a simple connection.

Aging Without Feeling Old explores the deep interweaving of sight, life, and aging. Combining medicine, personal reflection, and the shared experience of the baby-boomer generation, it speaks to everyone who wishes to stay independent, active, and fully alive as the years go by.

Written in French by an ophthalmologist, the book will be followed by an English edition adapted for English-speaking readers rather than simply translated — particularly in the passages devoted to the songs that shaped a generation.

  1. IPart 1

    Understanding Aging

Exploring how we change physically and mentally while maintaining confidence and vitality — to look younger, certainly, but above all to feel younger as the years go by.

  2. IIPart 2

Better Sight for a Better Life

Discovering the connection between vision, independence, and quality of life, through the stories of people whose everyday lives changed when they saw clearly again.

  3. IIIPart 3

    Looking to the Future

Exploring how artificial intelligence may advance our understanding of aging and vision — not replacing the surgeon, but becoming the surgeon’s ally.

  4. IVPart 4

    Looking Back

Reflecting on the evolution of refractive eye surgery, which in less than half a century has profoundly transformed the options available to patients.

Meet the Author

Sameh Fanous, MD

Ophthalmic Surgeon

Dr. Sameh Fanous is an ophthalmic surgeon and a pioneer of refractive surgery in Canada. He is the founder and medical director of the Montreal Eye Institute, which in 2024 became the largest cataract surgery centre in the country.

For some twenty years, he has observed a fascinating phenomenon: after the age of forty, when people regain good vision at all distances, they don’t simply see better. They regain a freedom they thought they had lost — to drive, to enjoy their activities and, above all, to read without constantly relying on their glasses. And with that freedom comes renewed self-confidence.

This observation became the starting point for a broader reflection on the art of aging well — and for this book.

“Vision has always intrigued and fascinated me.”
